Let's dive into something called an "Innovative Alternative (IA) Title 5 system" - a special kind of septic system, straight from the experts at Sewer Works-IA. So, what makes it different? Unlike a normal septic system, it doesn't follow the usual rules in design and construction.
A regular septic system has a few parts: a septic tank, a box for distributing or dosing, a soil soaking area (also known as a leaching area), and an area set aside for future use. But IA systems are different. They use techniques that have worked well in treating wastewater before. Some examples include sand filters that recirculate, units for aerobic treatment, composting toilets, and intermittent sand filters.
Think of IA systems as the go-to solution when the usual septic system can't be built as per Massachusetts Title 5 regulations, due to challenges like limited lot size, high groundwater levels, close private wells, nitrogen sensitive areas or nearby wetlands.
The key point of IA systems is that they are even better at cleaning wastewater before it's discharged into the ground. They extend the life of the leaching area, decrease the nitrogen content and are quite environmentally friendly. So long as they are properly designed, constructed, used, and maintained, these systems can offer a more sustainable, "green" solution for wastewater treatment.
The following is a list of some of the onsite wastewater recycling units approved for use in Massachusetts.
Manufacturer: AquaPoint
Product: Bioclere®
Bioclere® is a modified trickling filter over a clarifier that is designed to treat wastewater with varying organic and nutrient concentrations. Its natural fixed film biological treatment process is resilient, flexible, compact and simple to operate. The modular units can be installed in parallel to treat large flows or in series to achieve high levels of treatment.
Manufacturer: Bio-Microbics Inc
Product: MicroFast®
MicroFAST® wastewater treatment systems are ideally suited for use in single family dwellings, clustered residential developments and small communities. Proven, Safe, Reliable.
Manufacturer: Norweco
Product: Singulair®
Employing the extended aeration process, the Singulair® plant provides flow equalization, pretreatment, aeration, clarification, tertiary filtration and optional chemical addition within a single precast concrete tank.
